shortage of gas masks in israel

Gas Mask 1

Check this for randomness. I received an email earlier today from Ryan Nadel asking if he could use the photo above to illustrate a news article he’d submitted to NowPublic.com. The article? It’s about the shortage of gas masks in Israel and you can read it here. If you click on the slideshow link at the bottom my photo is in there. I don’t usually go for stuff like this, but it was so bizarre I couldn’t resist ok-ing it.

There are no gas masks in Israel because the world’s supply of gas masks has been used up by avant-garde photographers, performance artists, and music video directors.

Seriously, that’s got to be one of the most popular accessories with you lot.

Are you a comic book fan? I have no idea why I’m asking that, but you remind me of the type of girl who reads Grant Morrison or hangs out with Warren Ellis online. No, I don’t know that you are, but I’m just guessing based on your blog.

By the way, that’s an outstanding picture (like almost all of yours are) and congrats on being recognized.

Very cool.

Damn photographers, stealing all the gas masks! We’re an evil lot, aren’t we? In my defense, the gas mask isn’t actually mine. It belongs to a friend who collects weird masks. Although I’m considering organising some sort of charity event or gas mask amnesty now.

I’m sorry to disappoint, but I actually don’t know who Grant Morrison or Warren Ellis are. My appreciation of comics goes as far as those which have been made into movies (I feel there should be some level of shame in that), but I’m going to quiz my comic-loving husband as to who those two guys are. Actually, never mind the husband, you’ve just set me my Google assignment for the night :)

The comics that have been made into movies are usually pretty standard superhero stuff.

Ellis and Morrison (among many others) are best known for the genre-bending, strange, and artsy excursions into the counter-culture.

That’s why I thought you’d probably dig them. :)

Anyway, consider it a recommendation on my part. Even if you don’t go for the whole “Superman/Batman” school, you will love TRANSMETROPOLITAN, DOOM PATROL, and THE INVISIBLES.

Trivia: All the best comic writers are British. In fact, Grant Morrison and Mark Millar live in Scotland (I believe Morrison is Glaswegian). You might have met them by accident. ;)

oh my god,
i was all ready just to comment on the superb randomness of that request and :) ‘gasmask amnesty’ and then there’s someone mentioning ‘the invisibles’
I LOVE THE INVISIBLES!! thet comic was a bit of a fixation of mine when i was a lass and now you’ve sent me off on a geek-out-google-fest becuase i’d forgotten all about it. not to mention a trall of my book cupboard.

My goal in life is to spread the gospel of Grant Morrison. He is a strange and brilliant creative mind.

Also, check out DOOM PATROL and THE FILTH while you’re at it.

By the way, if you do decide to collect and donate gas masks, or raise money, good luck to you. That’s an outstanding thing to be so generous and giving.
